Dutch graphic and type designer Gerard Unger likened disjunction in text layout to “what can happen when we fail to notice a displaced paving stone”. Sometimes that tripping up leads to greater impact in a positive way, making us stop, read, decipher and understand in ways that we might not have, had the read been a smooth ride.
